Strategic Planning
Strategic Planning for Higher Education
You can’t chart a good route without knowing the terrain.
We lead workshops, dig into the analysis, and turn conversations into a strategic plan that works like a roadmap: a practical 3- or 5-year guide your team will actually use, and one that’s easy to update as your institution grows.
With Strategic Planning
A good strategic plan starts with honest conversation and data, and ends with a document you can turn to when it’s time to make tough calls.
The Strategic Planning Workshop
We start with a strategic planning workshop, gathering your key stakeholders to take an honest look at where your institution stands. Together, we revisit your mission, work through the institutional analysis (SWOT, PESTLE, and a clear-eyed look at risk), and brainstorm the goals worth pursuing. We also survey people across your organization, because some of the most useful feedback comes from outside the room. All of it becomes the foundation for your plan.
From Conversation to Plan
Next, we compile everything into a report for your team to review, then work alongside you to turn ideas into a plan. We finalize your strategic goals, prioritize the action items behind them, and assign the budgets, resources, and timelines that make each one real.
A Plan You’ll Actually Use
What you walk away with is a comprehensive 3- or 5-year strategic plan: one that reflects your goals, honors your mission, and holds up against regulatory and accreditation expectations. And because plans need to evolve, we build yours so that it can be easily updated, year over year, staying current as your institution grows.

Strategic Planning FAQs
What’s the difference between SWOT and PESTLE?
SWOT looks at your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; PESTLE scans the wider landscape, the political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental forces shaping higher education. We use both, so your plan accounts for what’s happening inside and outside of your institution.
Do we need a strategic plan for accreditation?
Yes. Accreditors expect evidence of meaningful strategic planning, in part because the plan itself is a mark of healthy operations: it shows you understand your budget, your staffing, and the realities of running your institution. A strong plan also makes your self-study and ongoing compliance far easier, so if accreditation is on your horizon, planning with it in mind from the start saves you work later.
How many years should our strategic plan cover?
Three to five years is typical, but the right length depends on your institution: how new you are, how stable your budget and staffing are, how solid your data and accountability systems are, and how fast your regulatory landscape is shifting. Newer or fast-moving institutions often do better with a shorter, more flexible plan, while stable, well-resourced ones can commit further out. We help you find the timeframe that fits, and we wrote a whole guide on how to decide: How Many Years Should Your Strategic Plan Cover?
Can you refresh a plan we already have?
Yes. If you already have a plan, we can pressure-test it against your current goals, financial commitments, environment, and the latest regulatory expectations and get it back into active use.
